The Vortex

One of the most touching experiences of my journey to Arizona is my encounter with the American Indians of the Hopi Nation. i accepted a surprising invitation to go to Second Mesa, in the Hopi reservation, for the ceremony of Wuko ́uyis, the main planting season, which takes place every year in early June, and is dedicated to the first corn planted. During that celebration, dances are held for an entire day in each and every village of the Mesas. It’s a traditional event, respectful of ancient rules, organized for the Hopi people, who gather and pray for rain. It’s not usually for tourists, in fact I then realised how lucky I had been to be admitted in it. It was tremendously beautiful and dramatically involving... I could not stop looking at the dancers while their hypnotic chants resonated within me... They were dressed as the Kachina of Corn... and I had a mystical moment when I was slowly falling into a trance by listening to their chanting until I allowed myself to be totally caught and I felt I had metamorphosed and shifted into a plant of corn! Very powerful, very grounding, very unexpected!
